Who is eligible to join the Chamber?

Accepted Answer

Membership is open to for-profit businesses (corporations, LLCs, partnerships, and other legally registered entities) and to professionals employed in director-level, senior management, executive, or equivalent leadership roles within for-profit companies.

Can nonprofit organizations, religious institutions, or government agencies join as members?

Accepted Answer

No. Membership is reserved for businesses and senior professionals engaged in commerce. Nonprofits, government entities, and institutions not engaged in commerce are not eligible for membership. However, they may collaborate with the Chamber through sponsorships, partnerships, or events.

Question 3

What does “good standing” mean?

Accepted Answer

A member in good standing is current on all dues and financial obligations, continues to meet the Chamber's eligibility criteria, and maintains a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and constructive conduct within the business community. Misconduct, or conduct deemed disruptive, unethical, or harmful to the Chamber, may lead to suspension or revocation of membership. Before suspending or revoking the membership of a member, the Chamber will provide written notice stating the reason and the effective date, sent at least 15 days in advance, together with a reasonable opportunity to be heard, consistent with Minnesota law.

Who decides if an application is approved?

All membership applications are reviewed by the Chamber’s Board of Directors (or its designee). Approval is at the sole discretion of the Chamber.

Can the Chamber deny an application without explanation?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Membership is a privilege rather than a right, and the Chamber reviews each application on its merits. The Chamber reserves the right to approve or deny applications at its sole discretion and is not obligated to provide reasons for a denial. If an application is denied, any dues paid are refunded in full.

Question 6

If my application is denied, will my dues be refunded?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If your application is denied after payment has been submitted, the Chamber will refund your dues in full. Once membership is approved, dues are non-refundable, including if you later resign or your membership is suspended or revoked.

Question 7

Is Chamber membership transferable to another person or business?

Accepted Answer

No. Membership is specific to the approved business entity or individual professional and cannot be transferred or assigned.

Question 8

Can the Membership Policy change?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Chamber’s Board of Directors may amend the Membership Policy at any time. Members will be notified of material changes.

What is the tax-exempt status of the India Chamber of Commerce Minnesota (ICOCMN)?

Accepted Answer

The India Chamber of Commerce Minnesota (ICOCMN) is a nonprofit business association recognized by the IRS under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a 501(c)(6) organization, ICOCMN operates to promote the common business interests of its members through advocacy, networking, education, and economic development initiatives.

Are membership dues or sponsorships tax-deductible?

Accepted Answer

Membership dues and sponsorship payments to ICOCMN are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions under IRC Section 170(c). In many cases they may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses, subject to IRS rules and individual circumstances. However, the portion of dues attributable to the Chamber's lobbying and political activities is not deductible under IRC Section 162(e); the Chamber will notify members each year of the estimated non-deductible percentage. Members and sponsors are encouraged to consult their tax advisor.

Question 11

Does my membership renew automatically, and how do I cancel?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Membership is for a one-year term and renews automatically each year at the then-current dues rate. We provide advance notice before each renewal charge. You may cancel automatic renewal at any time by contacting memberships@icocmn.org or through your member account. Dues already paid for the current term are non-refundable.
